Headshot Tips | Denver Portrait Photographer

I’ve been having so much FUN lately working with people to give them a great experience while we create their headshots! And since I communicate this information quite a bit in emails and over the phone, I thought I’d compile a sort of “Top 10” list of ways to prepare for an awesome session.

And so... here they are all in one place

Top Ten Tips for a GREAT Headshot:
  1. When selecting your photographer consider, FIRST: that you resonate with the work you see on his or her website/portfolio. Are the eyes the main focus of the shots? Do you feel personality and connection in the subjects? Is the lighting good? SECOND: do you feel comfortable communicating with your photographer? Is he or she willing to talk with you on the phone? Your comfort level the day of your session is critical to getting great connection in your photos.

  2. Wardrobe: You should bring 4-5 different looks to your session. We may not shoot them all, but it’s always great to have options. Think in shades of casual to dressy, but keeping all options in line with your brand. Think about necklines. Think about colors that compliment your skin tones. Nothing flashy or busy that will distract from YOU (so no logos or busy patterns). Jewelry in most cases will distract from you, so unless it’s part of your brand (and you are confident it will stay that way until your next headshot session) leave it at home. NOTE: definitely talk with your agent if you think he/she will have input!!

  3. At least a week prior to your session: gather and TRY ON your wardrobe items. If you’re only doing a headshot, no need to worry about pants (I mean, you’ll need to WEAR pants to the session, of course... ). Consider colors that complement your eyes/skintones. Think about different necklines and texture (not pattern -- this can be distracting, but a fabric with texture is often quite lovely). And think about tops that flatter your body and colors that complement your skin tones, and don't forget to include any undergarments needed (i.e. no striped undershirts/black bras under light shirts!!) and... please launder / press as needed.

  4. If step number three has left you uninspired, perhaps it’s time for a new shirt or two? (which is why step 3 is NOT the night before your session). No need for anything fancy unless that’s your brand. Your headshot should be a direct reflection of you, as you are. For actors, you want to arrive at your audition looking essentially like your headshot for it to be the most effective tool.

  5. A few days prior, make sure you stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. Think of this as you would preparing for an audition. This will help keep your skin clear and eyes bright! But don’t stress if you wake up with blemishes the day of your session (don’t mess with them as it will generally make them worse -- let photoshop do the magic there!)

  6. Exercise the week prior so you feel great (especially if that’s your thing), but there’s no need to put off a headshot or portrait session just so you can “loose a few pounds.” You’d be amazed what good posing can do to flatter every and any body!

  7. Day of session: make sure you’ve familiarized yourself with directions to our meeting place and leave yourself time to negotiate traffic and parking. Nothing worse than arriving frazzled, except perhaps arriving late when there might be a session scheduled after yours. Loosing out on session time stinks!

  8. If you’re getting professional makeup and/or hair, arrive with your face and hair clean. If you wear makeup normally, feel free to bring a snapshot of how you’d like your makeup to look so your professional makeup artist can compliment your normal look, making it "camera ready" (this is especially important for actors).

  9. Trust that you’ve hired a photographer who has experience and will be able to direct you into your most flattering poses (this is critically important since you can’t see yourself, after all!)

  10. If you have done your homework on 1-9, the only thing left for you to do is to relax into the session, HAVE FUN and allow your photographer to direct you to project your very best!!

Behind the Scenes: The Contact Sheet | Denver Portrait Photographer

What a blast I had photographing a new male model this weekend in my studio! He had the goal of building his portfolio for a modeling agency, and had never been professionally photographed before, but clearly, he's a natural! Directing his shoot was a breeze and am just loving this preliminary collection -- so impressed with his variety of expression and ease with posing.

And can I just take another moment to say how much I love all of the opportunity ripe for the taking in and around this studio!? Just found that graffiti wall wandering around this weekend. Good stuff.

Should be noted that these photos are completely UNedited -- after the shoot I take the set from several hundred photos down to a set that is manageable for a client to make their final image selections, then all retouching will happen on those.

Enjoy this glimpse behind the scenes, and come check out the Merritt Design Photo portrait and head shot studio for yourself sometime!

Portrait Shoot in my NEW STUDIO! { Denver High School Senior Photographer }

Ali and I had an absolute BLAST workin' it in this session.

First of all, how STUNNING is this amazing young woman?!

But what makes it even better is that she was just as excited as I was to experience the session as something empowering and fun; to explore the grounds of the factory where my studio is located, to feel the amazing light, and to express her beautiful depth... and together we discovered some pure photo MAGIC.

I am so lucky to get to do this! And I am super grateful to have found this studio, as the grounds are truly special -- natural light pouring in and bouncing everywhere, authentically vintage (an historic cotton mill!) and endlessly inspiring.

New Photo Products!! [ Denver Family & Portrait Photographer ]

[ High Quality Archival Prints! In Gorgeous Frames! ]

For too long I resisted jumping on board with the likes of "those" photographers who only sold actual photos and wouldn't release files. I didn't get it. I wanted my clients to have ALL of their photo files to do with as they pleased.

But then...

... then I started visiting clients' homes and realizing I was inadvertently favoring quantity over quality, giving them a inferior product by not overseeing the quality side of my end product. Photos were printed with poor color calibration, on paper that was fading, cropped improperly by automated machines, and looking diminutive on a wall.

Or -- the horror! -- they were sitting lost in a folder of files somewhere. I know you know what I'm talking about...

Bottom line is that I care about my clients too much to have their investment not reach it's potential, and I have too much passion for my work to let sub-par prints or lost files be representative of what I'm putting out into the world.

To that end, I have searched high and low, I have sampled, I have queried, and finally I have sourced an incredible lab (which happens to be based in Denver -- how great is that?) and hand selected a line of extraordinary products on which your photographs will look simply magnificent!

[ 5x7 Image Box ]

So, it's time for your photographs to break out of pixel jail and have a VIBRANT LIFE BEYOND THE DIGITAL FILE!

Speaking of digital files... most of us really only want a digital file so we can share it with friends and family via email, facebook, and other social media. And I'd like you to have that ability as well! So, for every photograph you purchase, you will ALSO receive a web resolution file which is licensed and optimized for you to share electronically!

If you are still on the fence as to why it is worth the investment in real, finished, quality products, here are a few more of the factors that changed my mind:

1) Most of us will enjoy files for a very limited amount of time and then they will become forgotten pixels in a computer file somewhere. Why invest in professional photography at all if it will be lost?
2) Files WILL become corrupt over time.
3) Files will likely be un-readable by future computers / programs (think about how quickly video cassettes became obsolete... then DVDs replaced by BlueRay... etc.)
4) Professional prints are archival, color-calibrated, and guaranteed by your photographer to look the way you want.
5) This is my favorite: Prints on your wall and books on a coffee table, of your family, will be appreciated day after day, year after year, and hopefully generation after generation!

They become HEIRLOOM ARTWORK.

[ Miniature Accordion Books ]

What could be better than a gallery of fine art celebrating the love of your family in your home?

And YES! I am carrying a gorgeous line of frames now, too!

I am MADLY IN LOVE with all of these incredible products and have samples for you to touch, feel, and see for yourself why the investment in photographing your family can end in something far more satisfying, lasting, and beautiful than digital files!

Photos from the... NEW STUDIO!! | Denver Portrait Photographer

Meet Mica!

I had such a blast photographing this lovely young woman in my new natural light photo studio!

Mica is such a darling person -- and her vocal talents will blow you away (check out her website).

I'm so excited about this unique photo studio, located in a turn of the century historic cotton mill just west of Santa Fe on Evans.

Historic architecture makes for a wonderful backdrop, and throughout the building is the kind of incredible light that can best be found bouncing through historic leaded windows and off brick and whitewashed walls.

It is simply DREAMY.

The studio also features fun sets as an integral part of its authentic history, and the possibilities for amazing portraits, from traditional to more unique, are endless.

I photographed this set right in the middle of the day, on a day mixed with direct sunlight and clouds.

I am positively IN LOVE.

And then... there's this amazing blue wall... don't you just love it?!

And yes, more traditional studio photographs are possible in here, too... What a blast!!

Thank you to my amazing friend and model from today -- Mica, your radiance shines so brightly from within you!!
