Photos from the... NEW STUDIO!! | Denver Portrait Photographer

Meet Mica!

I had such a blast photographing this lovely young woman in my new natural light photo studio!

Mica is such a darling person -- and her vocal talents will blow you away (check out her website).

I'm so excited about this unique photo studio, located in a turn of the century historic cotton mill just west of Santa Fe on Evans.

Historic architecture makes for a wonderful backdrop, and throughout the building is the kind of incredible light that can best be found bouncing through historic leaded windows and off brick and whitewashed walls.

It is simply DREAMY.

The studio also features fun sets as an integral part of its authentic history, and the possibilities for amazing portraits, from traditional to more unique, are endless.

I photographed this set right in the middle of the day, on a day mixed with direct sunlight and clouds.

I am positively IN LOVE.

And then... there's this amazing blue wall... don't you just love it?!

And yes, more traditional studio photographs are possible in here, too... What a blast!!

Thank you to my amazing friend and model from today -- Mica, your radiance shines so brightly from within you!!

Head Shot Shoot-Off [ Denver Portrait Photographer ]

My boy and I both needed our head shots refreshed, so yesterday we took advantage of a lovely Sunday in Denver to have fun taking portraits of each other. He assists me on photo shoots from time to time, so thought it would be fun to let him be in charge of the camera and direction, to see what he could do.

In addition, since he's an actor, I have discovered this is a great way for him to learn what its like to be on BOTH sides of the camera.

He's a fine young photographer as well as actor, as it turns out!

We do have fun... I'm a lucky mom!!

Veggie Paprikash [ recipe-ish post ]

To be clear, I am not a food blogger. {Shout out to the many amazing food bloggers out there!} So, with that disclaimer out of the way, I have been inspired lately by some amazing recipes -- and photos -- on Pinterest, and my creative juices are on overdrive. Setting out these veggies for dinner the other night, they struck me as too pretty not to capture.

I do love cooking. And yes, I am a photographer. So while this dish isn't exactly traditionally beautiful, it is delicious, and colorful, and I would love to share this pseudo recipe with you ("pseudo" because I never measure anything and this varies every time I make it, so this is really more of an outline than a recipe!)  This all veggie meal is my new favorite, and honestly, too good not to share.

This vibrantly hued creation was inspired after making chicken paprikash for the first time a few months ago. The comfort in that bowl was indescribable, and I got to wondering how those basic comfort flavors would translate in an all veggie dish -- and without the extra carbs in the egg noodles.

As an aside, how GORGEOUS are the colors of fresh ground turmeric and paprika?

If you've been wondering what all the Turmeric fuss is about lately, it is part of the ginger family (ever since buying it for a photo shoot, I now buy the root when I can find it fresh, but here I used the ground spice).

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years, but is one of the wonder spices being praised lately for both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as many other health benefits, including possibly even slow the progression of Alzheimer's.

OK, so, as you'll see below, this dish is not traditionally photogenic, but what it lacks in formal presentation it more than makes up for in COLOR.  And my goodness is this dish ridiculously tasty! My 12 year old son and I think it is every bit as delicious as dessert. If you make it, be sure not to cook too long in order to keep the veggies as firm as possible -- healthier and the extra texture is fabulous.

Seriously. If you think you "don't like vegetables" -- I dare you to try this and not fall in love with the amazing flavor of nothing but real, healthy food.

Ingredients:

Red Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes (Jewel)
Olive Oil
Onion
Heirloom or Grape tomatoes
Garlic
Hungarian Paprika
Turmeric
Chicken or Veggie Broth
Broccoli
Carrots
Beets
Kale
Marscapone
Salt and Pepper
Crispy Fried Onions (for garnish)

Other ingredients we've loved in here include:

Mushrooms
White Beans
Garbanzo Beans
Cauliflower

Method:

Bring cubed red and jewel potatoes to a boil until just starting to soften (I use Jewel potatoes since learning that they stay firmer than garnet, and I like my veggies firm!).  Remove, drain, and set aside.

Meanwhile, sauté slivered onion in olive oil over med-low heat in olive oil until onions are soft and clear.

Add chopped heirloom or grape tomatoes and garlic

Season with generous amount of paprika (seriously, I use at least a teaspoon -- I personally love Smoked Hungarian Sweet and Spicy) and another heap of ground turmeric. Stir for a moment and allow spices to become fragrant...
Reduce heat to simmer and add chicken or veggie broth (maybe 1/2 cup? Basically you want enough to mix flavors, spices and create a sauce in which veggies can gently steam without having to cook them too long).

Add whatever veggies you like next -- we love broccolicarrotscauliflower and beets in this dish...

Stir the (firm, nearly cooked) potatoes back into rest of veggies... Stir and simmer for just a moment or two, just long enough to barely soften the broccoli, beets and carrots. Everything should still be very firm when you remove it from the heat -- healthiest that way!

Remove from heat, add chopped kale, and a big spoonful of marscapone.  Stir until kale is wilted and marscapone has melted ...

Salt and Pepper to taste... and add Crispy Fried Onions for garnish, if you're so inclined.

Here's to your health... and your tastebuds!!

I swear, every time I do this lately I end up with this feeling that these are my new FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHS EVER! I'm thinking that's a good thing, right?

But seriously, finding a spot in an alley (new favorite locations here!), using natural light to my advantage, and most of all, being entrusted by such amazing people to capture their portraits and head shots... and those of their incredibly talented children!

I seriously LOVE my job.

Telluride AIDS Benefit Photo | OSCARS Poster

Hmmm... So this was just brought to my attention.

On the right, my photo, designed and photographed for the Telluride AIDS Benefit Art Auction in 2010. On the left, this year's just released OSCARS poster, designed by Olly Moss.

Copyright law is tricky, but it is sort of uncanny, don't you think? I sure wouldn't mind some tickets to the Oscars...

Environmental Portraiture | Denver Colorado

Sometimes it still catches me off guard how much I love photographing people.

I mean, I'm a photographer. And I genuinely love people. So I'm not sure why this should surprise me, but it does.  I think it's my background: architecture doesn't move, or feel self-conscious. Or blink.

But seriously, even with the unpredictability inherent in photographing a person, I can hardly explain how much of a thrill I find in making a person FEEL how beautiful they are. Maybe there is some thrill in not knowing what I'll discover in that session. Finding a gorgeous spot of light, setting a person at ease, making someone smile from their eyes ... it gives me butterflies just thinking about it.

And when the result is a set of photos like this? Crazy love. Seriously.

Modern in Denver | iPhoneography

Modern in Denver magazine blows me away -- consistently -- like no other publication out there. Seriously. Quality of content, graphic design, editorial choices. Love. It.

What a thrill it was when publisher William Logan asked me to contribute a series of iPhone photos to a feature to include iPhoneography of local designers, architects and other Denver creatives.

Deciding on a single theme to contribute was a fulfilling exercise. My iPhone gets FAR more use as a camera than as a phone, so I have no shortage of image collections -- all still growing! Finally I decided on this set, my most consistent muse being uniquely beautiful Colorado light -- in this case in the city. Even in my days as an architect, I was always in fascinated with natural light and how it plays on design elements. Having a phone always on me with which to document fleeting reflections, shadows and other beautiful light-drawn design keeps my senses constantly on alert.

So here's the final collection -- now in print! (the photos below of the magazine captured, of course, via iPhone).  Always exciting to see work in print -- but there's something really special about being able to share these intimate glimpses captured without any final goal in mind other than pure aesthetic whimsy.

As always, even the layout of the feature is beautiful!

Check out the Winter 2013 issue, on stands now (above). Someday I'll have to try that portrait above with a real camera -- captured brilliantly by my son at a local coffee shop.

Below are of some of the original photos.  iPhoneography has absolutely enhanced my experience of enjoying a spontaneous walk in the city.  And in many cases, these simple captures have even inspired future more official and planned photo shoots. What a fabulous creative tool!

Photography Studio | Top 10 Tips for Success

With a desire to start the year with a positive outlook, Sandy Puc just began a great discussion thread on LinkedIn asking people to think about the Top 10 things they believe contribute to a successful photography studio.

I love taking the first week of January to revisit goals for my photography business, and so was inspired to take a moment to reflect on my overall strategies for success. In no particular order, here are my Top 10 (ok 12) things I have observed over the years which motivate me every day.  Some I live with confidence.  Others I am still working to make wholly mine. What would YOU add?

1. THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE: Make booking, scheduling, delivering, and of course, shooting the photo session a memorable and fun experience.  Inspire referral business through existing clients.
2. SMILE: Yes, you. Genuinely. Smile!! On the job ... and at the proverbial coffee shop (can’t even count how many clients I’ve earned with this philosophy).
3. INSPIRATION / EDUCATION: keep reading, networking, attending seminars and workshops, and staying abreast of current trends, and try new things based on what inspires you.
4. GOALS / LISTS: keep both business and personal, and self-impose deadlines for non client driven ones. If you keep pushing back a deadline, ask yourself if the item should really be on the list (if so: do it! If not, remove it or put it on a separate back-burner list).
5. MARKETING: Schedule regular activity and think outside the box to market yourself creatively (in print, in person and via social media) Your website should reflect your personality. And especially when you’re starting out, don’t show every photo, show only your BEST photos!
6. COMFORT ZONE: Push it! Often! Shoot new material.  I love to use my phone camera to shoot personal projects even on days when I'm not shooting for clients.
7. PRICING: Review cost of business and package pricing annually and always communicate clearly and confidently with clients (unless you happen to love negotiating -- which I decidedly do NOT -- printed materials with pricing menus help tremendously).
8. MONEY: Fall in love with the business side of what you do. This is still my biggest challenge. I had to finally design myself a beautiful system of spreadsheets b/c the available software systems were all too dry for me. May sound silly, but it works for me. Find what works for you.
9. CONTRACTS: Know and continually update your contracts to stay on top of constantly changing on-line world (especially if you work with digital files and licensing). Educate your clients about copyright laws, and gently educate clients that they are investing in your talent, creativity, instinct and vision, NOT paper and ink.
10. GRATITUDE: Be grateful for the fact that you get to do what you love for a living! Remind yourself of this simple and amazing fact when times are tough.
11. ACCEPT CHANGE! Don’t attach to old ways of doing things and don’t be afraid of learning new tricks. Let go of fear, take chances, dive in...
12. TAKE DANCE BREAKS. Often. Crazy ones. They are immeasurably good for the spirit. Not to mention sore, over-worked eyeballs.
