I was recently hired by interior designer Sefra Maples to photograph a gorgeous newly remodeled home.  Loved shooting in a slightly different way than I would for the architecture details alone, here striving to capture quiet moments and the relationships of color, form, detail, art and sculpture.

Just for Fun: Painting with Light + Color

I have experimented for years with the technique of slowing down the shutter speed and panning my camera while exposing a shot, but to get an image that goes beyond just a blur to something soulful and beautiful is not easy! This year I finally achieved a few images that I really love.

Using a camera to "paint" with color can be hugely satisfying... It is incredibly fun to take an exposure beyond straight capture, into a whole new realm of creativity.

Some images are more abstract than others, and really start to feel like paintings, complete with brush strokes of natural color and light.

I look forward to experimenting next with printing these on fine art papers!

First issue: Architecture: in Photographs

This is pretty cool, if anyone besides myself is excited by the concept of being able to design and publish, on-demand, their own magazine... My first issue is a collection of architectural photographs from the Telluride area. I am really happy with the quality of the product (paper, color, etc.)... Check out the preview at MagCloud...

I look forward to designing my next issue, shooting to include Aspen and Denver locations...

Perspective.

Shooting architecture is truly fascinating to me. You have an opportunity to tell a story about function, form, detail and spatial flow, and the choices that you make truly do shape how the viewer understands a space. I like to shoot several different vignettes on the same space, and allow my clients to choose which photos speak most powerfully to them.


You can see in the following four photos of the same exact space (a truly beautiful, one architects, inc. designed remodel) how differently they speak to the elements of the space being photographed. Each perspective tells its own story.


We start with an exploration in the juxtaposition of old, textural material vs. a new, steel wall - pure elements with a touch of mystery hinted by the rug around the corner:

This perspective tells of connections and the relationship of adjoining spaces:

Here is a more formal study of lines, forms, materials and architectural perspective:

And finally, one last shot, peering upstairs, still using the reclaimed door to ground you in the space.

It's all about perspective!

Horsefly Mesa Wedding, Telluride

I'd like to extend a sincere Thank You to Melissa Plantz for the invitation to shoot this wedding with her earlier this summer - hopefully the start of a great working relationship!

Fortunately (as this was a destination wedding), this Saturday wedding avoided the cycle of showers that day (what a wet summer it has been in Colorado!) as its location was just far enough from the mountains on one of the local mesas. From there, we got to watch the weather come and go over the Wilson Range while we basked comfortably under one of our trademark Colorado skies.

Dogs, kids, touching and thoughtful do-it-yourself touches everywhere - it was a joy to shoot! Oh - and the carriage was a surprise to the bride from her father that day - what a great element of charm it added to the celebration!

What a beautiful gift it is to be invited to share in such an intimate celebration of love, intimate family and friends... it is incredible how much I feel for these couples after shooting their weddings, even when, as in this case, I met them for the first time that morning! I truly do wish them a life of happiness! And I once again feel so lucky to do what I do!!

Had a blast shooting this gorgeous contemporary home a few weeks ago in Telluride, Colorado for James Hardy, Architects. Exquisite attention to detail, exposed structure and mining vernacular blended beautifully with the softer, more textural finishes of the interiors, making the job of photographing this home highly satisfying!
